Lethal Weapon Star Clayne Crawford Fired

Just a few weeks after reports surfaced of trouble behind the scenes of FOX’s Lethal Weapon series, a new report suggest co-star Clayne Crawford has been fired from the show. The news comes as Warner Bros. makes a last-ditch effort to recast the role of Martin Riggs in what may be the show’s only chance at a season 3 renewal. The problem of recasting has apparently hit a snag as multiple actors are reported have been offered the role, only to have passed, leaving the studio that produces the show in a tight spot as FOX readies its fall schedule.

News of Crawford’s on-set behavioral issues emerged weeks ago, along with the possibility of his being removed from the role altogether. Since then more details about the incidents have emerged. One incident resulted from Crawford becoming angry over what he deemed an unsafe work environment, and the second involved an actor being hit by shrapnel from an effect during an episode Crawford was directing. Deadline reports that the actor in question on the second incident was Crawford’s co-star Damon Wayans.

At the time of the initial report, Crawford had not been officially terminated from the series, and he even released a statement regarding the allegations against him. In his statement, Crawford acknowledged the two incidents, saying on his Instagram account:

Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford in Lethal Weapon FOX Clayne Crawford Reportedly Fired From FOX’s Lethal Weapon Series

“I absolutely love, respect and care for my crew and cast, and would never intentionally jeopardize so many jobs. I an incredibly sorry if my passion for doing good work has ever made anyone feel less than comfortable on our set, or feel less than celebrated for their efforts. Furthermore, I apologize to all the crew and cast for any negative attention Lethal Weapon is receiving because of these incidents.”

As reported by THR, Crawford’s acknowledgement of the incidents and apology thereafter apparently weren’t enough to save his job, and, if Warner Bros. can’t find a suitable replacement for the actor, the series itself will likely be the next to go. Despite solid ratings in its sophomore season, Lethal Weapon remains on the bubble just days ahead of FOX announcing its fall television lineup at the network upfronts in New York on the afternoon of May 14. And with multiple actors reportedly passing on the chance to replace Crawford in season 3, the series has been left in a precarious position.

For the time being FOX has remained quiet as to Crawford’s apparent dismissal from the series, as well as its intentions regarding the future of the Lethal Weapon TV series. We will keep you posted as more news is made available.
